FIRE INSTRUCTION

Arkansas Highlands Forest Works provides training packages in Wildfire and Incident Command courses that are sanctioned by the NWCG (National Wildfire Coordination Group). Instructors are certified by the NWCG. The courses offered are from the basic to moderate levels (100-300) and are the classroom component. Physical examinations and certifications are not provided and are the responsibility of the student's employer. Passing the physical portion of qualification in addition to the educational or classroom qualification is necessary before proceeding with full qualification for various positions. One website, National Wildland Fire Training, provides information on training and qualifications and is found at www.nationalfiretraining.net. Arkansas and Oklahoma Federal and State Fire Training can be found on the web at www.fs.fed.us/oonf/ozark/fire/training. Another local site is www.fs.fed.us/r8/ouachita/fire/fire_training.

The following courses are currently included in the training programs being offered by AR Highlands Forest Works:

I-100, Introduction to ICS (2 hours)
S-130, Firefighter Training (32 hours)
S-190, Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior (6 hours)
These three courses are needed for qualification as a Firefighter Type 2 (FFTR) and are the pre-requisites for most other NWCG field positions. Non-line positions are more specialized and some do not require the basic fire-fighting courses.

S-215, Fire Operations in the Wildland/Urban Interface(20 hours). This course is aimed at those resources more involved with structural fire protection such as rural fire departments and other engine crews.

Other courses in the 100-300 level can be presented with advance notification for preparation by certified instructors.
