Forest Management Planning

For Arkansas the primary State Agency responsible for forestry assistance to landowners is the ARKANSAS FORESTRY COMMISSION. State Headquarters are in Little Rock. District Forester offices are located in various locations around the state. Each Arkansas county has a County Forester assigned. The County Forester is the key contact for private forest land management assistance. The following is the AFC website which contains information on who to contact and what type of assistance is available:
Arkansas Forestry Commission When the AFC site comes up, click on "Manage Your Forest" section. This page provides links to many resources including the Forest Stewardship Program. An electronic application for the program is found here and with approval, a free management plan prepared by a professional forester and other resource specialists is obtainable. Wildfire Information

At the National level, a coordination center operates at Boise, Idaho that provides daily updates on the wildfire and other emergency incidents in the US and other parts of the world. Wildfire photos, links to all Federal and State wildfire agencies, information on federal programs, and many other resources are found here. You can access this site by clicking on:

Another state agency providing assistance to private landowners is the ARKANSAS GAME & FISH COMMISSION. Private Land Biologists (POB's) are assigned to assist foresters in development of Stewardship Plans and provide valuable assistance in wildlife and fish habitat improvement practices. At the Regional level, there are 11 Geographic Coordination Centers in the US that coordinate emergency activities and collect information from all federal, state, and local wildfire agencies in their geographic area. Arkansas is included within the Southern Area Coordination Center located in Atlanta, Georgia. Other states included are OK, TX, LA, KY, TN, MS, AL, VA, NC, SC, GA, FL and Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. A third site containing valuable information about timber management is ARKANSAS TIMBER INFO. This site was developed by a consortium of federal, state, and private organizations to provide forest landowners with valuable timber management information. Localized fire information is coordinated by the Arkansas/Oklahoma Coordination Center located in Hot Springs, Arkansas. This center coordinates information for the Ouachita, Ozark, and St. Francis National Forests; the National Park Service; the Arkansas Forestry Commission; the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission; the Oklahoma Forestry Services; the US Fish & Wildlife Service, the Bureau of Land Management; and other reporting units in the 2-state area.
